Of all the chronic conditions, arthritis is probably the most common in America today. In terms of those registered as disabled, it’s the most common cause cited. As those who have this painful condition will know, it’s very difficult to find an effective way of managing the pain over the longer term. Although some treatments can and do produce relief for a few days or weeks, the risk of side effects from long-term use rules out extending the relief through drug use. So we need to begin with a brief description of arthritis so we understand the problem. The word is applied to a wide range of different conditions, but the common denominator is pain the joints and damage to the surrounding muscles when people keep trying to move despite the stiffness in the joints. The most obvious symptoms are a swelling in the joints accompanied by pain when moving. This shows most clearly in the mornings, people waking stiff after lying still in bed.
There are many ways you can deal with pain. Numerous gels and lotions can provide an analgesic effect and reduce inflammation. Herbal painkillers can deliver relief to moderate painful symptoms. Physical therapy can help you recover after an injury and eliminate the discomfort. Yet the most popular solution to pain of virtually all kinds is using prescription oral painkiller medications. Drugs like Tramadol have significant benefits over other forms of pain management since they are very convenient to use and provide the required effects in a very rapid fashion. Some people are turned against potent painkillers stating that they deliver unpleasant side effects. And this is true to a degree. Yet before you start using any potent analgesics make sure to learn more about them first.
The most effective and popular strong painkillers used in medicine today belong to the opioid class. One of the most prominent, well-known and the first to be actually used as a potent painkiller is morphine. It has become very popular in the beginning of the 20th century and is still used intensely in different countries mostly for relieving severe pain in emergency rooms and after surgical intervention in hospital. Although there are other potent opioid analgesics used in medicine as well such as codeine, methadone, oxycodone and many others, morphine is often used to display the drawbacks of this type of medications and compared to another infamous opioid drug – heroine. And it’s very important to understand how these substances work in order to grasp their potential drawbacks and be able to avoid them.

Thanks to Robert Louis Stevenson, the Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde first appeared in 1886. It’s become one of the all-time classics of horror literature as our hero alternates between the kind doctor, and the rather more violent alter ego. This was a chemical intervention, but it produced a state we would now classify as bipolar disorder, i.e. the individual swings rapidly between very good and very bad moods, usually ending up in a depressed state. The main difficulty is that once people lose a proper perspective on their own health, they stop taking decisions in their own best interests. So the first step is to understand what can happen. No matter what the personality of the individual before taking the drug, the first sign is being quick to anger. No matter whether the outburst is justified, the level of verbal abuse can rise to unacceptable levels within moments. Worse, because the anger is not necessarily a response to a real provocation, it’s unpredictable and therefore more difficult to deal with. If you know A has an allergy to dogs, allowing a friend to visit with a dog is obviously going to trigger an outburst – and the symptoms of an allergic attack. When you can foresee problems, you can take preventive measures. But when the cause of the outbursts is the medication, there’s nothing you can do except to suggest a reduction in the dosage or switching to a different treatment.

In the good old days when men were men and women knew their place, laws were implemented no matter how much they offended the principles of equality. Now the wheel has turned, and the law has recognized the principle that, in order to enjoy the fundamental freedoms guaranteed under the Constitution, the treatment accorded men and women must be the same. Except there are issues when, somehow, this principle seems to be ignored. For some, the dictates of religion trump secular ideas of equality, particularly when it comes to abortion. In recent bills brought before the lawmakers in various states, there’s a new aggression in the air. For example, the Senates in Idaho, Virginia, Texas and eight other states are slowly edging toward the passing of laws to require women to have a fetal ultrasound examination before being allowed to proceed with the abortion. In Virginia, the issue has reached such a point that police in riot gear were recently called to defend the steps into the Capitol. To the majority of women, this is an invasion of the privacy between a doctor and the patient. Worse, it legislates on a strictly medical matter for a political purpose. There’s no medical reason to have a fetal ultrasound. Indeed, since it requires a probe to be inserted into the vagina, it’s considered inappropriate. In this instance, its only purpose is as a deterrent to women about to go through an abortion procedure.

Over the generations, aspirin has been a household staple for minor problems. It was not necessary to get a prescription for aspirin. You can take quite high dosages for any length of time without adverse effects. This is not to say aspirin is completely safe. If you take an excessive amount, it becomes poisonous and it becomes dngerous for your life. But some people abuse this drug. The FDA recognizes the more serious risks if you take corticosteroids in too high a dose or for too long. That’s why they are prescription only. The idea is to force you to go to a doctor and get useful instructions on how to avoid the negative side effects. Put it this way. There are real benefits from treatment using these drugs, but there’s a risk of more seriously illness.
Where is the problem? If you are taking the drug, the active ingredients go into your bloodstream and are taken all round the body. You can’t get to decide which part of your body to target. As a result, you can quickly experience unpleasant effects in any places. For example, your moods may swing quite rapidly and your legs may swell with fluid retention. Taking the drug over time can make your immune system less effective, reduce the calcium level in your bones making them more fragile and affect your eyesight. None of these effects are desirable.
